My name is Steve Pickering.  I have operated businesses from home since 1981. I decided early in my career that my home provided many advantages over the traditional office, factory, and on-the-road venues for business. Although I initially struggled with my home businesses, as technologies evolved, marketing from home became easier and more cost-effective.

One of my first realizations was the tremendous power of the telephone, so I made it my mission to learn how to use it effectively. Although I could never call myself a telemarketer, I learned that most businesses and consumers preferred a brief telephone call to any other mode of communication. Although my approach is always evolving, based on new technologies, equipment, and social customs, I’ve found that the telephone is more effective than ever.

As the telecommunications industry began to favor home businesses, the internet roared onto the scene during the late 1980’s. My initial exposure to the internet was through proprietary services such as Compuserve® and corporate message networks, but by the early 90’s I was heavily involved in the internet. By 1996 I had my own web site, and have developed a number of sites since then.

Let me assure you, my experiences have had many ups and downs, but the overall experience has been exhilarating. I hope you find my thoughts useful, especially in light of my long background in operating a business from home. Background: Steve Pickering has operated several home-based businesses. He has a B.S. in Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and served as an Artillery Officer in Germany during the late 70’s and early 80’s. During several corporate sales, marketing, and manufacturing positions, Steve pursued his home businesses on a part-time basis. He now fulfills his entrepreneurial passions full-time in the Orlando, Florida area.
